Morning sunshine on field

Making summer stay a little longer

September is here, the air is getting more crisp and the days slowly shorter. But fear not! There are still plenty of possibilities to enjoy the outdoors and soak up the early autumn sun. In this post, our bloggers share their tips.

Art and nature in and around Stockholm

Within the Stockholm region there are lots of fantastic places for smaller day trips. Artipelag art and sculpture museum to the west east of Stockholm was a great find. For hikers there is a sculpture trail around a lake and for the art lovers the museum it top class.

To the south there is Hellasgården lake and nature reserve for swimming, water sports and sunbathing. Also don’t forget Tyresta park, a huge idyllic and intentionally unmanaged forest, perfect for camping and hikes of all lengths. For something more central there is Skogskyrkogården, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and woodland burial ground.

To the west of Stockholm there is Birka: The city of Vikings, a Unesco world heritage site. It’s a good way to see the waterways more inland and experience some history.

My favorite summer trip is Gotland. A beautiful island with special geological rock formations and a beautiful medieval city in Visby. There is something for everyone there and frequent ferries from Nynäshamn.

You have probably seen the ferries offering trips around Stockholm for visitors to see the city from the water. Two years ago, I learned from my colleagues that we can have similar trips with local transport – just use your SL card and hop onto a SL ferry. These ferries have scenic routes showcasing beautiful places of Stockholm with several stops. You can start your trip at Stockholm Nybroplan and enjoy the views from the top of the ferry. If it’s a cold weather, remember to wear a warm jacket, as breeze can make it feel even colder.

Explore a new neighborhood

You know how you easily get into the routine of going to the same places in your own city? Here is an idea – try something new! Take the bus or the bike to get into a part of the city where you usually don’t hang out. Walk around, explore and have a fika. Maybe you find a new favorite spot!
