Meet the blogger – Amy Hillen

Hi! My name is Amy, and as the title gives away, I have recently joined the corps as one of KI’s research bloggers. Who is this new person, you ask? I can honestly say that I am someone who struggles with introducing themselves, no matter how often I receive the question. So, where do I start?

Today, I’ll start, inspired by a memory of a past introduction, with my favourite dessert, which is warm apple pie with vanilla ice cream. A humble, but most wonderful, dessert for someone with a – what often feels like – humble, yet wonderful, background. Originally from Belgium, I have been thriving in Sweden for the past 9 years. With my KU Leuven’s master’s degree in biomedical sciences in the back pocket, I started my journey at KI as a research technician and have since moved on to a position as a senior laboratory manager.

Both positions have allowed me to learn a lot about diverse topics in several fields. As you would expect, some of this knowledge – both practical and theoretical – is related to the research being conducted in the team, other knowledge is related to anything behind the lab scene, and more knowledge is hidden in some unexpected corners where I never even imagined I could ever go looking. I will refrain from wearying you with detailed descriptions at this point in time; some interesting reads on the topic may appear in the future. Suffice it to say that I am not an expert in a single thing, but I have found that I know a little bit about a great many things. And whenever I find myself humble in that I do not know something, I know how to find the information I need.

This brings me to why I’m here, on this blog, though I am not a student or a PostDoc. You probably have already guessed that I greatly enjoy writing, but it is one of those things that I am not (yet) an expert at. So, here I am, very much looking forward to trying my hand at penning stories that you will hopefully enjoy reading as much as I enjoy writing them.

See you for my next blog!
